Already released in Japan, the build on the floor just needed a full translation into English and it would be ready for retail shelves. One of Okami's big advantages at the show, of course, is that it's pretty much finished. It's a true evolution of the typically-unmoved console adventure genre and offers an art style entirely its own. Putting users in control of a goddess that has transformed herself into a wolf, Okami isn't really like anything else and that's what we like about it. these are but a few of the words that sprang to mind every time we played Capcom's unique lupine action/ adventure, Okami. Other Nominees: God of War 2 (Sony), Heavenly Sword (Sony), LEGO Star Wars 2 (LucasArts), Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (publisher TBD), Starfox DS (Nintendo), Stranglehold (Midway), Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (Nintendo) Runner(s)-Up: Gears of War (Microsoft), Lost Planet (Capcom) Sure, the game is a little rough around the edges right now, with some AI and framerate issues to be solved before its release, but it's not scheduled to hit shelves until early next year at the earliest, so assuming that Ubisoft can polish this up like its other AAA titles, we could be looking at something very cool come next year. Once the kill is made, you'll need to make your way back out of the city by weaving through the crowd or hopping from rooftop to rooftop for a speedy and safe escape. The more odd your behavior, the more likely they are to back away and draw attention to your actions, and thusly bring the guards. The game's AI promises to be something special, where each of the many civilians that crowd city streets reacts to whatever you do. One that stood out as a surprise however was Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed, a game that aims to mix the stealthy kills of Hitman with the hang-on-for-your-life platforming of Prince of Persia. There were a ton of great action titles at this year's E3, though many of the biggest hits were to be expected. Without further adieu, we present to you our overall winners for the Best of E3 2006. We want to know for sure that the titles we vote on are being manipulated in real-time, so although we do acknowledge some truly badass presentations with at least one award, the bulk of our awards are for real-time gameplay. In case you're wondering about our criteria for the winners, with the exception of one category (namely 'Best Non-Playable Presentation'), the nominees for all of our award categories have to be playable at the show. There's some arguing, some scratching, some biting and a whole lot of hugging, but eventually we end up with a list of quality titles that we're all happy to call the 'Best of E3.' A few days after E3, we lock ourselves in a room and vote on what we think are the best games of the show.
